That's because many "sheeple" are so convinced by religious doctrines, Nostradamus, the media manipulation of the news, etc. that when something kind of big happens, they think it's the end of the world. Remember the computer glitch of the year 2000? Many of the computers would go haywire (no pun intended). Well, guess what....nothing!
As for Sept 11, 2001....sure it was messed up what happened, but in the large scale of things, it was only 2 buildings, and approximately 3000 lives. What if it was a nuclear blast instead? Or a gigantic earthquake? Things could have been much worse.

Because that was the most horrific thing to happen in the lifetimes to a large percentage of the population. I didn't think the world would end, but I didn't know how it was going to be changed, either.

....They didn't.
Americans were in a state of shock because we tend to live in an enclosed and sometimes smug bubble of supposed invulnerability here in the US. We'd not experienced a terror attack on American soil in 5 years, and it was certainly more coordinated and on a larger scale than anything we'd experienced before, but I don't think anyone felt the world was about to be obliterated.

Because America was virtually untouchable. If the unthinkable in THAT respect happened, why not the end of the world as well?

Because all the religites out there are waiting to be vindicated by the "end of the world" so any chances they get to say its coming they jump all over it.

ha, I find that hard to believe; the world as we know it in the USA did change, but not "the world," that's too much of an urban myth

Did they? I was in the US and I didn't think that. But yes, weren't people in a blind panic?
