I have a Dell laptop and have filled 1/2 of the hard drive with my music. It is starting to effect performance so I want to move all music and my iTunes software to an external hard drive to improve my laptop performance. Is this a good idea? What features should I look for when shopping?

Size- for what you want to do, say 60GB to 80GB drive size
Connectivity- either firewire or USB 2.0, if you dont know if you have a firewire port, get the USB kind.
Speed- go with one that spins at 7200 RPM, ask someone at the store about it.
Manufactuer- go with Seagate, Western Digital or Iomega External drive. Dont get a Maxtor, they tend to burn up over time (become unuseable)
Good luck

Purchase an External HD at least twice the size of your HD on the laptop.

Since music takes a lot of space you should look at 160 GB or larger. My Wal-Mart sells Seagate HD at very reasonable prices.

I just bought this at Fry's a few weeks ago:
http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-External-FireWire-Drive-Backup/dp/B0006FS1Z0/sr=8-1/qid=1158003539/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-6204797-4947164?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

It's been great so far. Very quiet, easy setup, no problems.

Look for speed and noise. You want to have at least USB2 connection and make sure it runs quiet.
