When I'm at the department store, should I attempt to try them out on myself or on the salesgirl? Or would it be better to simply ask the floor manager to take me to a back room and slap my face through her entire inventory as I growled a variety of insults?

You should try Gauntlets 'R' Us. They have a variety of gloves specifically designed for slapping faces. I prefer the ones fashioned from rich Corinthian leather and studded with hobnails. I was encouraged to try them on the salesman and he was knocked cold. After the swelling went down he told everyone he got the scar at Heidelberg. Other good choices are chain mail and sharkskin.
