A graphic novel is a nicely bound, larger in length comic book. Most of the time a standard comic book has a soft, flexible cover and is 22 pages long. A graphic novel comes with a stiffer cover and varies in length but is generally over 125 pages in length.

There are two basic types of graphic novels: original story and collected series. Original story is a new original story created especially to be released as a graphic novel. This format used to be more popular but is not so much anymore.

Nowadays most graphic novels are of the collected series type. This could be a mini-series of comic books that are collected into a single volume, for example Frank Miller's Sin City. Or it could be a collection from an ongoing series and contains a limited number of issues. The Ultimate Spider-Man is a good example here. The series is currently at 100+ issues and it has at least 14 graphic novel collections with 6 issues in each.
