First person has you dead to rights, but hey, at least you're trying to learn something.
I suggest you go to Wikipedia and look up Iraq. The entry there is probably being changed a lot, but I'll bet the editors are keeping things pretty factual (and getting rid of the garbage that I'm sure is appearing all the time).
What I do know is that Iraq was a Soviet client until the 1980's when they went to war with Iran - and since Iran was our enemy because of the hostage crisis, we started giving money and arms to Saddam while the Soviets bought off Iran to keep the pressure off their (Soviet) occupation in Afghanistan.
Confusing? Sort of, but read up and you'll begin to wonder how funny it is that things go around like this.

Iraq has been important to America since it was known that Iraq has the world's second largest oil reserves. Iran coveted that oil in the 1980s and Saddam was America's friend when he stood against Iran but he then let America down by doing oil deals with the Chinese and Russians amongst others.
America felt betrayed by Saddam and decided to topple him and put in a pro American regime. This was judged to be the only way of stopping the construction of pipelines from Iraq, through Iran and Afghanistan into China and Russia. I support this because I don't want the most powerful countries in the world to be communist ones.
My analysis could of course be totally wrong and it isn't the whole story in any case. There is neoliberal idealism here too (Tony Blair style) and I also support aims to liberalise the muslim world and free peoples minds from the fear that Islam promotes.

In the 1980's Iraq was at war with Iran. Reagan sold Saddam chemical and conventional weapons to fight Iran. Theres a famous picture of Donald Rumsfeld shaking Saddam's hand from the 80's.
Iraq and Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11, or with Al Quaida.

You are confused about the Shah and Iran. Read.
As to Iraq -
America and Great Britain are in Iraq because Saddam Hussein and the Baathist's failed to comply with the terms of the agreement that ended the first Gulf War (10 years of UN sanctions, no fly zones, etc.) and because of the attacks of 9/11.
After 9/11 changed our world, these two liberal democracies feared that an acknowledged mass murderer with billions in Petro dollars wouldn't hesitate to drop a nuke or chemical wmd on Europe or America. In their view, it was safer for the west to remove him from power and deal with the military consequences than allow him to stay in power.
Sometimes, leaders are forced to choose the least worst option.
