My spouse is an FTM. If you are passing (that is - seen as the gender you want to become) then you use the bathroom of what you want to become. If you are in no way passing than you use the bathroom of your birth gender. If you are at an in-between stage it is safer to use the women's room - because most women will not have a physically violent reaction to your being there. That is, if you don't have any other options available. Other options are: Single stall bathrooms - you may use either because you will be the only one in there, having someone with you to check if the restroom is empty, or holding it until you can get home. Holding it had caused my spouse 3 Urinary Tract Infections so far - so it's not advised. We generally try to travel in a "known" area - if we go out for the day, we know where our friends work and who will let us use their bathroom, we also try to make sure that we stay within reasonable travel distances of friends/families homes - so that we can stop in to use theirs. There are solutions, the biggest worry is other people's reactions.... my spouse does not worry to much because I am there to defend, shield from view, and tell someone to mind their own business.

You are allowed by law to use whichever toilet matches your presentation and don't let ANYONE tell you any differently. ALL police and paramedics in the USA know this, because they are required to take gender identity sensitivity courses and must complete them...there is no excuse.
We all have needs, going to the bathroom shouldn't be a problem for anyone, especially for little kids in transition...when you're in your stall sitting down it's YOUR business not anyone else's that you're using the toilet...tell them to mind their own business...
BE POLITE, be courteous, help others and let them help you...we need people to understand that transgendered people whether they are male or female or anywhere along the gender spectrum for that matter, on any given day, are humans being first and foremost...and we may have to help them understand that part of the equation in life...so, be who you are and stand tall.
Sometimes that little tiny not really noticed act of kindness will make the difference in someone's life just enough that it opens their mind about your world and make them think...
...for many, that's all they will ever need to be your friend...you are not alone...
The world is changing....change with it or you'll be left behind...

If you can pull it off (as in, you REALLY LOOK like a woman), go to the ladies' room... If not, then use the men's, please. Women don't like the idea of a man in drag sneaking around the powder room any more than men like chicks watching them stand at a urinal... Nothing personal, but that's just the way people are. I had a co worker who was transgendered, and she (used to be a he) used the ladies' room. Her friend, a transvestite, used the men's rm bc he had a heavy beard that couldn't be concealed.

I would think that if a man is in "girl persona", he would use the ladies room. If a woman is dressed as a man, she would use the men's room. What difference does it make? If I saw someone dressed as a women walk into the men's room, I would think that she was confused, and try to get her attention. And vice versa. Unless someone draws attention to it, you wouldn't know.

ok if i am in wal mart and some dude in drag comes in and STANDS up to pee, he better be in the mens room! If he is in drag, and sits to pee, I dont care. because when one is walking to the toilet and spots a person STANDING to urinate, when we women know women SIT to pee, then it is wierd! I dont care if they have 8" hanging, and they sit to pee,in the womens room, then that is ok. It is the standing- to- pee- in the womens room, that I would be uncomfortable with.... I have a friend , "jack" who dresses as a woman,(and looks better that way,)and he sits to pee when he is "Jacqueline", stands to pee when he is himself,in the gender -appropriate bathrooms. Does that answer your question?? Ps, i also have used the mens room, when I was pregnant because the womens room was full. SO imagine the men in the men's room's fright, then they saw a very pregnant woman entering in and taking a leak!! ( no,I did not stand up,thank you!)

I think this is a very good question and I think this is the sort of thing that Yahoo! put this site up for.
I think you should use whichever restroom you feel the most comfortable with.

I thought this was a question about a crossdressing transgender toilet. I am remodeling my bathroom and thought that sounded interesting. Oh well.

you should use the restroom that you identify with. if you identify as a female, use that restroom. the unfortunate thing is is that it can be very scary and there can be a lot of backlash. if you have female friends see if you can go in with them if you're afraid.
