i did it and my songs were still there. just make sure to back them up on your hard drive. and then, when reinstalling, make sure to use the same ipod that you originally had!

I suggest download the latest version and reinstall without uninstalling the older version.

Only the songs that you purchased from iTunes store run the risk of being deleted. If you have them on iPod, you can use a software like ephPod to get music from iPod

No they should never be deleted, but to be safe try copying the directory C:\Documents and Settings\(user)\My Documents\My Music\Itunes to a backup location or even to a CD or DVD depending on the amount just to be safe and you really should have a backup of your music in case your computer were to crash.
