No don´t feed the ego. There are quite easy ways of encouraging someone and developing their self-esteem without pandering to their ego. Point of their positive qualities to them but do it in a matter of fact way, or just in passing conversation.
If they are in need of help it might be better that it comes from the professionals. See if they would be interested in counselling, or maybe even some kind of spiritual healing with counselling involved. Start looking and you will probably find the perfect person for them.

I believe that support is essential to helping someone get better (and get help in your situation) and maybe an encouraging word. But "feeding the ego" is just prolonging the inevitable. It is like continuously pouring water into a bucket that has a hole in it. You keep pouring and pouring and it never stays there. Before too long you will be completely drained and your friend still won't be any better because their need is bottomless.
Just suggest they talk to someone objective that could help them? Tell your friend you are too involved and can't be of much help but you will support them.
Good luck! : )

I don't know about feeding an ego but you could just help them recognize their own strengths and abilities in an effort to assist them in feeling they have the resources to change things/get through a crisis/discover new possibilites/ cut themselves some slack

I am also against the ego feeding technique. All it does is reenforce negative behavior by rewarding it.
