Women are economically disadvantaged in comparison to men and more often overburdened with child care costs and responsibilities. Women who are in poverty are expected by men and society to cope against increasing pressures and are stigmatized as"bad mothers" if they ask for help. Notice that women, particularly with children, are under-represented in social care services that offer financial assistance and care, compared to men. Some women, under these pressures and stigma turn to cash crimes in order to avoid stigma. A majority of women in custody have committed cash crimes and are much less likely to be convicted or commit crimes of violence in comparison with men. Judges, usually male, will provide higher punishments to women for the same criminal behavior as their male counterparts.
