I will be speaking to a group of adults interested in completing a BA or MS degree. Do you know of any stats or info that may be helpful to them? For example - salary increase, ability to negotiate higher salary. I am looking for specific stats.

About $15,000 per year more. Over a lifetime about $1 million.

Is it a comparison between the average person with a degree versus the average person without (i.e. 2 different people) ? Or is it a comparison between a person with a degree versus the SAME person without ?

My observation (as a 20-year veteran software architect, without a degree) is that it didn't make the slightest difference, once I was in the job - once I had 4-5 years experience no-one cared.

So getting a degree might only result in either - the same person not being able to get the desired job without a degree (lawyer, doctor etc.) and it might mean a delay (it took 6 years to get into software in the 80's - if I'd done a 4-year BSc as planned, I'd have saved 2 years (but I wouldn't have had the same earning power over the first 4 years - so I'm guessing that balances out.

SO, after all my preamble/waffle I'm of the opinion that the only time a degree matters is when you have to have one in order to do the job (doctor, lawyer, etc.) I don't it makes any other difference.

IMHO.

if you live in United States

http://stats.bls.gov.

If you live in Australia

look for 'the graduate employment guide book' which can be obtain free of charge from your local university or they can let you have a look.

Both stats are pretty accurate compare with the dodgy stats i see around.

The best sources you can get is to speak with people you know who work in these industry or industries that are similar to the industry you want to work in.
