People are afraid of snakes because of they way they look and feel. And they have probably heard terrible stories about snakes. Many people I know are scared of snakes for one reason is that they don't know if the snake is poisonus or not so they kill one if they see one. Many people have phobias of snakes so don't go around making fun of people because there afraid of snakes. Its a very normal thing. I am not one of those people who are afraid of snakes though....I held a six foot Black Rat Snake!

Most people are afraid of what they do not understand. People don't see that most snakes are truly more afraid of humans than humans are of them. If you understand that snakes are doing it to protect themselves and not out of anger (and if people don't tempt snakes) then there is nothing to fear.

People fear what they do not understand. Simple as that. And snakes are more afraid of people than people are afraid of them.

The source of the fear comes from prehistoric times when humans lived without fire in Nature. Snakes were the only potential killers that could slip up on our earliest ancestors, even when they slept in trees. Snakes were silent killers and greatly to be feared. That fear has never left most of us. It is imprinted through generations of genetic and cultural progarmming.

People have an inert fear of what they do not understand. Most people do not know enough about snakes to realize that most species will not hurt you and they are actually quite fun to have around.

Probably because they're extremely different from us. There's nothing on their body that we can physically identify with, except for maybe eyes, but even those are hard to compare. Their habits are also completely different. And they bite. Which is never good. It's the same with spider and creepy-crawlies. They seem very alien to us.

Same reason they are afraid of anything else. Involuntary nerve response to specific stimuli triggered by and individuals past experience or perceptions.
