I was offered a recording deal as well as a publishing deal and I dont know what the difference is.

The deal to record is to physically make the song and put it on tape (disc). The publishing deal is to publish or print the song under your name, as being your intellectual property. Congratulations, by the way

to better understand go to the dictionary or do a search.it is very important to have good publishing deals.
on top of the recording deal.
