I found an incredibly well-made on at an antique store, but it needs to be refinished. I'd like to paint it and decorate it, but I'm not that creative. I would like it to look classic and feminine.

I would paint it light brown, and then use stencils (unless you are talented and can paint freehand) to add designs to the borders on all sides. Flowers seem like they would have a nice feminine touch. If you do it all yourself with no outside help, you do not want to get too complicated or go for something that seems simple on a website, but ends up looking bad because it was actually more complicated than it seemed. If you know a lot about refinishing and painting, you can get more complex, but try not to make the trunk look too busy. Simple is much more feminine :)

If you want it to look classic, don't paint. Just use Murphy's Soap and Murphy's Oil on it. If you really want to decorate it, you should keep in mind that the value depreciates about 80%.

That said, if you really want to change it, why not scrapbook it? You can get scrapbooking crafts everywhere. Choose feminine patterns that are light and lacy. You can use newspaper clippings or photographs, but I would use laminating paper on them to prevent aging and bleeding. You can get laminating sheets at Wal-Mart and craft stores. You can sometimes get newspapers from important dates, like the day you, your parents, your children were born. Juxtapose headlines with photographs. I would use plain old Elmer's glue to position the articles that I pasted on the trunk. When you are finished, spay several coats of shellac or brush on polyurathane. Shellac will look more natural, but any leather on the trunk will soak it up.

I saw a trunk once that had a beautiful painting of mountains at sunset inside the lid. Very nice.

Good luck!

I would leave her the normal grey, but a nice gold nose ring may add a degree of femininity if you can get her to stand for it.

cut out pictures from magazines and them paste them on with this awesome water-resistant stuff called "mod podge" that you can get from most craft stores. a friend of mine has decorated almost every surface of her room with it and it's so retro and funky

Not really. But how funny would it be if they had a show on MTV "pimp my trunk".
