A Novel has to have more than 40,000 words
A Short story has under 7,500 words
So a Novella would be shorter (17,500 - 40,000 words)
and a Novelette would be even shorter (7,500 - 18,000 words)

A novella is a narrative work of prose fiction somewhat longer than a short story but shorter than a novel. For a more lengthy explanation look it up on wikipedia. Go to wikipedia.com and search for "novella."
