Education in engineering in India has standards far better than most american colleges. (I have assumed here that you are comparing the educational standard to an Ameican University).

Let me give you some conceret facts to back this up.

I am an electrical engineer who gradualted from REC Surathkal (Karnataka). It has been consistantly ranked in the top 10 Engineering colleges in India. I graduated in 2003. I am comparing my college course with the course that is taught to BS (Electrical and Computer Engineering) at University of Texas at Austin. (I have chosen this university as after MIT and the likes, this was - as still is - considered as one of the best colleges for Electrical engineering in the US. Basically, at the same relative level as REC Surathkal, in the US).

This is the link for the Courses that are taught at UTex Austin: http://www.ece.utexas.edu/undergrad/ee04-06.html

This is the equivalent ay my college: http://www.nitk.ac.in/images/pdf/NITK-UG-CourseContents.pdf

You will see that most of the courses that are offered are on the same ar higher level as UTex Austin.

Just to illustrate some of the points of difference, even the most basic course on electrical engineering, the Introdution to electrical Engineering is taught in the sophomore (2nd) year in UTex Austin, while it is covered in the 1st year in REC Surathkal. The best part is, in the first year in REC Surathkal, all students have to study the basics of all engineering discplines. Students study the basic courses in Mechanical, Electronics, Computer Science as well as Civil Engineering. I am yet to come across anyother univeristy outside India that insists on this.

Also, follow this link to see the evaluation pattern: http://www.nitk.ac.in/images/pdf/nitk-lgs.pdf

You will again see that the evaluation pattern is very strict.

Before you jump to the concusion that this is the case only in one REC, it is not so. All IITs and RECs and all privately funded colleges follow a very similar syllabi, though the grading pattern might vary.

I know this because a almost all of my school friends are engineers from various other IITS, RECs and other engineering colleges across the country, and we have all compared notes.

The next obvious question that will arise in your mind is what differentiates these colleges? The students, the Faculty and the exposure that students get in each of these places.

90% of the difference comes from the students. Obviously, the tougher the admission process, the better are the students in the colleges, and that naturally sets an environment for excellence. In all these good colleges, students are generally very studious, very hard working and hyper competetive. I do not say that bad apples do not creep in, but they are few, far in between, and at the end of the four years of engineering, are a fully transformed lot.

In almost all the cases, especially if you consider the IITs, the RECs and other well reputed engineering colleges, the level of the faculty as well as the exposure is pretty much on the par, with a 5-10% difference in the quality of the faculty and exposure. By this, I mean a faculty in an IIT will get a rating of, say 95 on 100, while that in an REC or other well reputed college will get anywhere from 85 to 90 on 100. Similar for the exposures - inter college tech fests, cultural activites and other such avenues.

So, like i said earlier, the level of education is as good, if not better than american standards, but at the end of the day, it is the environment of education that we foster in these colleges and in India as a whole, that makes us better than most.

As far as it comes to the part about meeting international Job requirement standards, the demand for Indian engineers everywhere in the world should more than answer your question.

Sorry if my reply was a bit longish but i felt that i should give you all the facts to support my opinion.

Also, the spell check seems to be temporarily out of order...so forgive the typos if any.

I would rather hire people with American education. The Indians I see at work are either very competent or they don't know what they are doing. One guy when I asked about his experience all he said was I got it in India and would screw things up all the time.
