I went to donate blood and my level was 12.9... I barely made the cut off. You have to be in the range of 12.5 to twenty something. What does this mean. I wasn't able to donate because my heart-rate was over 100. Was this from nerves? I am eighteen and in good health.

12.9? I thought your iron had to be much higher to be even considered. But, I went and donated last week and my pulse was 102 and I just had to sit for 10 minutes for it to go back down.

Lots of information (including normal values) for iron testing found at the link below. It's best to follow-up with a doctor to find out what is "normal" for you, and if there is cause for concern. It is not unusual for women your age to have iron deficiency, especially during menustration. Make sure you are getting iron in your diet, whether from red meat, beans, spinach, or other sources. See second link below for more info on dietary sources of iron. If you cannot get enough iron from food, you may have to take iron supplements, but there can be side effects. As for your heart-rate, it might be from nerves. If you know how to take your pulse, you should take it at times when you are not donating blood, lying down and standing up. Again, a doctor could help you with this.

I don't know why your heart rate was over 100. That's not a question that can be answered online. A normal serum iron range is 13-31 SI units and 75-175 Conventional units. Ranges vary from lab to lab. However, you may have a mild iron deficiency. If you have concerns, I suggest you see your doctor.

The normal iron level is 50-150 micrograms/100 milliliters. The number and range you're saying might be SI units, which is 9.0-26.9 micromols/liter. So, I'm not sure what they told you... ;) How far over 100 was your heart rate?
