The liver is a filter of toxins for the body. Liver disease caused by excessive drinking affects millions of people around the world and is the fourth leading cause of death for urban males in this country. No effective treatment has been found for alcoholic liver disease, however, in part because no one knows exactly how alcohol injures the body's largest internal organ. Scientists know that excessive alcohol causes inflammation in the liver. Inflammation occurs when alcohol kills some of the normal bacteria that live in the intestines. When the bacteria die, they release poisons known as endotoxins. The poisons then damage the liver.

Liver damage is a cumulative process that occurs over a period of time. Just as we can't define how many cigarettes it takes for lung cancer, we can't define how much alcohol it takes to kill a liver. It would likely depend on genetic predisposition and other environmental factors.
