This may seem lame, but I went to the Bahamas in 2004 and got engaged on the beach. I'm married now. So yeah, that changed my life.

I went to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in January, 1994, where there was no government at all except for UN patrokl (most by mercenary Moroccan soldiers).
The USA, my own country, had engineered the instability of Cambodia in the early 1970's, and I saw the final result after Pol Pot had wrecked the nation and the Vietnamese had taken over (and eventually pulled out because it was costing so much).
The human misery that was the result of international power plays and the carnivorous selfishness of the NGO personnel is something I'll never forget.

When I was in India, I had tea at a language teacher's house.
The entire house was about the size of a large office cubicle - a bed on one side, a stove in the middle, and a table on the other side. It had a dirt floor.
The man lived there with his wife.
He was very intelligent and very happy, and I always think of him as a role model when I start to get caught up in the materialism of wanting a big house and a new car, etc.

I just got back from a year of volunteer service in Belfast, Northern Ireland. I am a Master of Divinity student in Louisville and this past year really helped to put a lot of my studies into perspective and helped to focus my ministry goals. I also have some (hopefully) lifelong friends out of this experience. I suggest volunteer work of any length to anyone who wishes to see another side of the world - overseas or here at home.

I've been to Oahu, Hawaii. I enjoyed the difference in culture fromt he U.S. mainland, b/c the Japanese own everything out there.
It has helped me to become more tolerant of different cultures.
I have also lived among Native Americans of the desert Southwest, which has done the same thing.

Cozumel, Mexico
Seeing how the people there lived in such impoverished conditions, made me really appreciate all the things I had ever taken for granted ~ and totally made me respect them for how hard they work there and don't let anything get them down.
