The phrase I learned for order of operations was: "Please excuse my dear aunt Sally". Use the first letter of each word to remember the order of operations:

P-arentheses
E-xponents
M-ultiplication
D-ivision
A-ddition
S-ubtraction

In the problem you give, you need to do multiplication first.
The answer should be 23.

1/ Explanation
==========
The order of the operation is very important

indeed if you do the operations in the order they are written you get 17 - 4 x 3 + 18 = 13 x 3 - 18 = 39 - 18 = 21

If you do it in the order recommended by the mathematicians (i.e. the correct one) by performing first the multiplication and the division you get 17 - 4 x 3 + 18 = 17 - 12 +18 = 23 which is not at all the 21 of above

2/ Recommendation
===============
As you can see this kind of problem can easily lead to erroneous response so it is always better to uses parenthesis
17 - (4 x3) + 18 = 23 without any risk of confusion

3/ Remarque
==========
People with little mathematical education will tend to perform the computation in written order while people who have received more mathematical training will always first perform the raise to power "^" and then the multiply and divide "*" and "/" and finally the addition and substraction "+" and "-"

Do the mulitplication first....then subtract that answer from 17 then add 18....so 4x3=12 17-12=5 18+5=23 so the answer would be 23 you follow the rules in order PEMDAS (parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction)

Start on the left: 17 - 4 = 13. 13 X 3 = 39. 39 + 18 = 57.........

Always remember the order of operations:

1.) Parentheses
2.) exponents and roots
3.) multiplication and division
4.) addition and subtraction

you have to use the order of opperations:

first do multiplication, then the addition and subtraction

17-4x3+18
17-12+18
5+18
23

it looks like you have forgotten the brackets...( ). these indicate which equasions are to be done first and seperate ie, (17-4)x3) + 18 = 57
