What are the steps involved when checking the maximum ethernet connection speed for a Linux OS machine?

You can try pinging your server at the ISP. Find out your IP address and type
ping IP where IP is your IP address with the last number changed to 1
so if your IP is 27.444.356.7 you should be pinging 27.444.356.1

also try pinging something like www.google.com
To exit press ctrl+c

You'll see how many kilobytes it sent, and how fast it went. Do the math and you'll find out the average speed.

also type ifconfig eth0 that'll also give you some info.

Same as for anything else:
Download a big file (say Firefox) and time it out.

Also, if you have a website or a cooperative friend on highspeed, upload a big file and time it.
