Can anyone tell me what was going on in the historical context during the time the story was written. I need to know what was going on in South Africa during the 1930's...anything will help.

,Apartheid was in full swing, that is, total separation of the races, Black and White. The penalties for a white man sleeping with a Black woman were severe. Usually death. If South Africa interests you I highly recommend two fabulous novels by Alan Paton. CRY, THE BELOVED COUNTRY and TOO LATE THE PHALAROPE. Both deal with Apartheid and draw a grim picture of it s effects on Blacks and Whites alike. I guarantee you will not be able to put these books down!! They are outstanding!!
