A histogram is used to graphically summarize and display the distribution of a process data set.

As I know of, there is no meaning to a 1D histogram. A histogram is used to explain the frequency of occurrence of one particular event. So, even if you are looking at only one event, it gains two dimensions - the event, and the number of times that event occurs.

the most commonly used histogram is a 2D histogram. A 2D histogram is a representation of a frequency distribution by means of rectangles whose widths represent class intervals and whose areas are proportional to the corresponding frequencies.

Wouldn't a 1D histogram be a straight line?

1D would show one set of data, but 2D would show 2.
