It depends on if you are getting the pet for a child or yourself. If you are getting it for a child I would say a teddy bear hamster. Out of all the different varieties they are the nicest! Though hamsters will bite, so will the gerbil. Though I have found with my personal experience the teddy bear hamsters they don't bite AS MUCH! Wash your hands thoroughly before you hold them because if they smell food they will bite! Over all I don't personally like them, though if it is space you are considered about they are great. But over all as far as small animals go I prefer Guinea pigs. They are usually very sweet, easy to handle, and make great pets! I hope that helps! If you are looking to get one of these animals do your research to see which one would be the best for you and your family!

Hamsters tend to be abit more vicious than gerbils as they are much more solitary creatures. However, if they are handled from being a baby they should be ok for the future.

The thing with gerbils is that you can't just buy one. They need a friend as they hate being alone. So you would have to buy two, and make sure they are of the same sex, as you don't want to wake up one morning and find millions of baby gerbils running around the cage! But gerbils are fairly sweet natured if handled early on and they make great pets.

Hamsters tend to fight if they are put in the same cage and so if you wanted two you would have to buy it a separate cage.

Gerbils are social, so you'd want to get more than one. Regular (not dwarf) hamsters are solitary so they do fine by themselves. So think about how many animals you can afford or are allowed to keep. You wouldn't want to get one one gerbil because it'd be really lonley and depressed.

Personally I would go for a pet rat. They're smarter, more affectionate, and they like people. The most hamsters ever do is tolerate people.

I've had both as pets and preferred the hamsters as they are way cuter and not as fast so easier to catch when they escape. But they are nocturnal so sleep most of the day which would drive kids mad. Also they can drive you mad making noise at night if the cage is in your bedroom. Gerbils are much livelier and active during the day.

Gerbils are much more lively and less easy to handle because of this. They are less prone to biting, although my hamsters have never bitten - I have known [people have problems with them. Gerbils are best kept in glass accommodation because they chew through everything plastic, or wood, like there's no tomorrow! I have had both and as long as you are aware of what you're taking on either can be lots of fun!

Go for a rat, they are much sweeter, and they can kinda sit still, hamsters and gerbils have a high tendency of biting, rats don't bite as much, but the males smell a bit more.

Get a pet rat if you want a rodent for a pet. They don't bite like hamsters and gerbils, they are FAR more intelligent and trainable than either a hamster or gerbil and they don't cost much more to care for!

Golden hamsters have to be kept on their own and can bit. Gerbils are friendly, thrive in groups and love nibbling cardboard which is then useful in your garden. They make great pets!

neither i would suggest a rat instead they are much better pets and live longer to but if i had to choose one it would be gerbils but buy a couple of girls and if you cant play with them they at least have company and the tank is easier to clean than cages anyway my gerbils are fantastic
