Dunking was 'outlawed' after the 1966-67 season, which was Lew Alcindor's sophomore year at UCLA. The NCAA hoped to cut down on Alcondor's dominance, but it didn't work, as UCLA easily won the next two NCAA championships with Big Lew at center.

The dunk was reinstated for the 1976-77 season.

The dunk was banned in the NCAA from 1967-1976. The popular story is that it was done to prevent Lew Alcindor (Kareem-Abdul Jabbar) from dominating the game by taking away his signature move, but that isn't the real reason why. According to John Wooden, Kareem's coach at UCLA, the ban was put in place to stop players from hanging onthe rim, which was causing damage to the equipment, such as bent rims and broken backboards.

Dunking was not allowed from 1967 to 1976. It was also known as the Lew Alcindor (Kareem Jabbar) rule. The NCAA thought that Alcindor would dominate the lane so they initiated this rule. In essence, they helped him improve his all-around game.
