Sometimes when I am walking, or when I shift my weight the wrong way, my knee gives out and it is very painful. If it is a bad dislocation I get pain, swelling and loss of mobility. It hurts and is embarrassing since I usually fall flat on my butt. What surgery, treatment, etc is available. I have already wwent through physical therapy and that helped, but it still happens.

1: Tibial tubercle osteotomy - moves and reinserts the patellar tendon into the shinbone (tibia).
2: Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) repair (the medial patellofemoral ligament attaches to the inner edge of the patella to help keep the patella from slipping toward the outer side of the knee).
3: Lateral release for a tight lateral retinaculum (a ligament complex that anchors the outer edge of the patella) that is pulling the patella off track (this procedure cuts the lateral retinaculum).
4: Arthroscopy for cartilage damage - a surgical procedure to look at the inside the knee through an arthroscope and repair damage to the joint.

Get knee braces from the drug store until you can see a specialist. And I mean an Orthopedic Surgeon. Just make an appointment for a "check up" and tell him your problems. I have similar problems with my shoulders and I see my Orthopedic Surgeon every 4 months like clockwork for injections of Cortisone, X-rays and every so many years a surgery to fix something.

Good luck.

I went through the same problem. I did the physical therapy and it helped, then, just like you it started happening again.

This time, I remembered some of the exercises that the therapist put me through, I went out and bought 3 lb ankle weights and did my own therapy at home. I have been doing it for about 2 weeks and my "episodes" have almost disappeared!

good luck

There are many different versions of the surgery out there depending on the Ortho you choose to go to.
Basically they will smooth the groove out, and shorten or lengthen different ligaments in the knee so that this doesn't occur. Occasionally they have to remove or add bone depending on where your deformity is at.
