Because they are much simpler; they do not have valves, camshafts, oil pumps, etc. Also, two-stroke engines produce more power, both per unit of displacement and per unit of engine's weight. In many applications, this is more important than fuel economy.

For specific purposes, the 2 stroke is much simpler, lighter, and more reliable. If you want a hand held weed eater, so you want a computer controlled 4 stroke with 8 overhead valves that wieghs 46 pounds? - very efficient - you would use only 3 ounces of fuel to weed the side of your walkway instead of 5 ounces of fuel used on the 1 pound 2 stroke, that has only 3 moving parts.
With modern technology there is hope for the 2 stroke in terms of
fuel efficiency and computer controls. The 2 stroke is TWICE as powerful as the same 4 stroke, so there are some advantages...

I think they are used in Motorcycles only and in rudimentary ones. They uae less fuel and are more pollutant to the environment, but they are in their final days, and some manufacturers stick to the old and make it ever lasting in a hopeless race with technology

2 stokes offer lighter weight, higher rpm thus more hp for same displacement and are not more gas efficient.
problem is, they do pollute more, and wear out faster.
