are there disadvantages to purchasing an internal hard drive and then enclosing it in a hard drive case so that it can be used as an external hard drive? should i go this route or just purchase an external hard drive?

there is no disadvantages at all, I like self made things, you can change the harddisk to any size, replace it, and its cheaper, keep up the good work

That's how a lot of externals are done. Just have the right power and you should be fine.
I would buy an external... you need the power supply, the transformer (to convert down to 5V), you need a switch, you need a case... that seems a lot of... monkeying around and I don't knwo if you're saving anything.

no disadvantage i did this for myself with 3 HD's already and i build them for people to
there are no disadvantages but the one advantage is you can find good deals on HD's and enclosures on line and end up spending alot less this way. when i sell them i make like $30 plus on each one and they take like 5 mins to put together.

I bought an enclosure and a hard drive and made one myself. There is no disadvantage to this.

THe only difference is it is easier to just buy a external one because you wont have to worry about compatablity, its already done for you

It is NOT worth buying just the case for the HDD you can buy one from http://www.iomega.com UNDER $200
Case cost close to $100 and it's not wroth it
