You really have to use the language to reinforce it, in that case it's very difficult, like and 8 on your scale ... To read and write, Katakana and Hiragana is maybe a 5 and Kanji is like a 10+ on your scale ...
Start with the basics
Arrigato Gozaimasu
R E got toe goes eye E moss
Means: Thank You
koko
coco
Means : Here
Ohio Gozaimasu
(just like the state)
Means: Good Morning
Hai
Hi
Means: yes or affirmitive
Gomenasai
Go Men a Sye
Means: I am sorry
Sumimasen
Sue Me Ma Sin
Means: Excuse me

Watching anime improves it a little, but I would say 9 because it's different from English. Sometimes it's switched, like if you say " I like coke " then in Japanese it's probably coke something.

anata omoshiroii desu - you are interesting
also if you watch japanese movies it helps to pick up words

i know a bit of japanese just off the internet... counting in japanise is really easy
ichi (1) ni(2) san(3) yon(4) go(5) roku(6) nana(7) hachi(8) kyuu(9) juu(10)
then it is juu-ichi(11) then ni-juu-ichi(21) then san-juu-ichi(31) etc...
