Most ferns should have green fronds from spring to fall- if not, it's probably dead, unless something very recently happened to destroy the fronds, in which case it may resprout. Some ferns stay green through the winter, others are deciduous.

The question is ambiguous because you don't say what kind of fern but in general if it's green and growing it's alive. But many ferns die back to the ground as winter approaches. Short of digging them up and examining the root system the best (and easiest) way is to wait till next spring and see if they come up.
