Your computer is very old I am assuming. I would do the following, buy more memory and upgrade to Windows XP. If your computer is running 256MB or lower it is too slow. You should be running 512mb or higher. To see how much memory you have simply right click on My computer and choose properties. At the bottom of the general tab you will see how much memory you have installed.

Windows2K works fine with many people, although I can say that Windows XP appear to be faster and a little more secured.
You must beware of the free download stuff. Sometimes you think you're helping your system but you end up clogging it with spyware, adware, trojans, etc.. all this take toll on your system memory and hence slow down your computer.
I need to understand what you mean by "breaking down". How old is your computer? If you're sure that your hardware is ok, let me suggest that you do a clean install. Wipe off everything on your disk, and get fresh applications on it. Beware, you need to have your restore disk handy. If you haven't got that, then ensure that you have the drivers to your system devices before doing a clean install.
Once you re-install the system, install a good antivirus and spyware protection. Then you can see that your computer will run faster.
Please note that adding extra RAM (memory) will help a great deal.

The exact same thing happened 2 me and i also have da same pc as u !! I got mine taken 2 a computer guy and he fixed it !! There was a virius on it ( use clean up or Virius check to get that sorted ), or another problem could be maybe you have too many things on your pc ( downloaded pictures, music ec.... ) But if you want to keep all them you can get something called a ram into your pc ( a ram is just something that gives it more memory space ) Me personaly would delete some stuff because a ram is expensive.

Try increasing more memory if you have space in your computer. You can go online and get an adware or spyware download to delete unnecessary files on your computer to free up more space. If all else fails, reinstall Windows 2000 to get a fresh start (which means saving all your backups before reformatting)

-Check how much RAM you have in the computer. RAM goes a lng way in helping you computer run alot smoother.
-When you did the disk defrag and clean up did you have atleast 15% of free disk space? Windows needs disk space to "think".
-Most "boost" your computer downloads will only cause you additional problems because for them to run they will need to take up some of computers resources ie, disk, RAM and processor.check out reputable web sites like http://www.download.com

#1 thing you can do is get more RAM. Many of the computers they sell these days don't have enough, so they run painfully slowly. If yours used to be fast and isn't anymore, you probably have adware on it - there are free programs to remove it, but they aren't totally successful, and you may need to just reformat your system.

It might be an old computer. Try deinstalling software and programs that you don't need. That'll free up memory. Also, you should delete un-used icons on your desktop.

I used PConPoint on my computer it worked great. I can't remember if it was free, if not it was very inexpensive. It searches your computer for errors and fixes them if possible.
