The pains (contractions) will start to come more often, and last longer. (when you start feeling pains start timing them and seeing if they are coming around the same time or earlier each time.

Actually my contractions were faint until my water broke. I did not know I was in labor until after my water broke. Many women experience different pains. My contractions were not coming regularly as most do.

Labor Pains can last anywhere from 30secs to 1 min. and come every 3min on up. I just had a baby on July 20Th and my labor pains were lasting 20sec every 2 to 3 Min's. I got to the hospital just in time because 2 hours later i delivered. If I did`t get there when i did, I would`t have been able to get my epidural. They also can come every min. which is probably a sign that you will have your baby really soon. If you think you are in labor the best thing to do is call your doctor and see what he/she has to say. I had to do that, because sometimes it can be a little confusing because you may not be sure if it is actual labor or false labor(Braxton Hicks).

The best way to describe labor pains is they feel like the pain you get when you need to go Diarrhea. I mistaken labor pains for diarrhea pains while I was pregnant. The only difference is they pains are consistent and pain increases. Usually when you are gong to go into labor and have your baby, it feels like you need to go to the bathroom. You feel pressure. You definitely know when your in labor. It is unlike anything you have experience.
If you have cramping pains just wait and see if they increase in pain.
Labor pains start out small and increase to where they are unbearable. I suggest going to the doctor when your in the middle stages of the pain or if your water breaks. As soon as your water breaks you need to go to the hospital. In a lot of cases, the doctor at the hospital will break your water.
So, If your unsure if you are having labor pains, then you probably aren't. Just wait and see if the pain gets worse and they come consistently.
Good luck.

It depends on where you are having your labor. If your stomach is getting extremely hard and you feel lots pressure in under your stomach and in your hips and down in your vaginal area it is a good chance. Time them and see how far a part they are. If they are 5 minutes apart it is time to go. It will get more painful as it goes along. Of course, way before you go into labor there is Braxten Hick contractions that may start several weeks before. The stomach gets hard but no pain is involved.
However, you may not feel anything in your stomach but may feel a lot of pain and pressure in your back (I did this with my 2nd child) you may also be in labor. This is called back labor.

It's hard to say. My labor started with mild cramping and uncomfortableness, and then back pain and intestinal cramping. I think I was in labor for about 2 hours before I realized something big was happening, and even then I wasn't sure it was contractions until the doctor told me it was.
