I highly recommend doing this - but just make sure you check with your gyn first - and use a pill that has a constant dose of hormones throughout the month. I do it because I get terrible PMS, bleeding, cramping, mood swings - and it's made my life so much better! You're doctor will probably recommend that you take the inactive pills every 12 weeks so that you'll get your period about 3 times a year.
I've been using Aviane pills for the past 2 years and it's been great! Seasonale is also good (because it's packaged for 12 straight weeks of active pills- but it can be more expensive).
BTW - if you're wondering if it's safe to only have your period once every 12 weeks - studies have shown that it's actually healthier. Think of it this way - women are having more periods throughout their lifetime than generations ago. Nowadays - women begin their periods at a younger age and have menapause later (meaning more lifetime cycles)- plus women used to have more children (and in some developing countries they still do). ie. when a woman is pregnant she does not menstrate (hence having less periods). The more periods a woman has in her lifetime can lead to an increased risk of cancer and other ailments. So if you reduce the number of your periods - it's perfectly fine!

She should ask her OBGYN if the kind of medication she is on can be run together.
Some of them can be successfully run together for up to 4 months... that is essentially what Seasonale is.
Come on... Normal? Sure it doesn't follow nature... But look at it our way... I take mine back to back to compete with everyone else because I have such severe problems, that I lose a week every month! I can't do that and be a great doctor.... Cut her a break.. if she's having that much pain.. It is perfectly fine for her research wise to have only 3-4 periods a year.

Its fine to run packets together and I used to do it regularly when travelling a lot. I asked the doc and he said it was fine. But take a break every 3 to 4 month s though and be careful if ur sick. I was sea sick whilst working on a ship and started to bleed cos the pills were nt in my system any longer.

no it's not normal to run your birth control together. your body needs to shed the excess blood. and if her period is painful she should tell her doctor. she could have some problems down there. there is a pill out that you can take so you don't get your period. but i don't know how long you can take it and i do believe it is just for those that bleed heavy for 2-3 weeks. any body can get pregnant on the pill. it's not 100% . good luck please don't try what your friend is doing. ask your doctor.

Experts have created pills specifically designed so a woman will only get her period 4 times a year. They've also done studies that concluded that skipping the placebo pills in a pill packet will have the same effect. They've also noted it to be very safe. I'm deciding on whether or not to try that myself!

It's fine. Female birth control pills prevent the lining of the uterus from getting thick enough to trigger shedding. It won't cause any problems, it simply prevents her hormones from telling her uterus to make the lining thick. She's not hurting herself, and you should be glad you don't have to wait a week or two while she's bleeding.
Yes, it's always possible she could get pregnant. No method of birth control, short of not having sex at all, is 100% effective. Not coming off the birth control has nothing to do with this, however.

Talk to your doctor. But I was told it is safe to do. Did you know the ONLY reason there is a break for your period is because when the pill came out in the sixties they thought it would freak women out not to have a period!! That having a period was associated with fertility and health, so they put they break in their for social reasons!

My wife told me that it was safe. She did this if her periods were going to fall on a holiday.
She also told me that she read once, that there was no need to have periods ever if you were on the pill.
At the end of the day though, all advice should be taken with a pinch of salt, unless it comes from your GP.

3 months max is ok, any more than that, she runs the risk of DVT. My friend did it for 6 months and ended up with a serious blood clot.

I asked my GP about this, and he said it's fine to run them together but should not be for longer than 3 months.
