You know that the rules state that you do not use a cell phone in class, so if you don't want to get into trouble for it...turn it off before entering the classroom, put it in your backpack and then when you leave the classroom you check the cell phone and/or turn it back on. Also, you should write your professor an apology for disturbing his class. You should have been embarassed and you have no recourse but to apologize.

It all depends on whether the professor in question had previously prohibited the use or carrying of cell phones in class, or as a university rule, it is prohibited. If the professor had laid down this rule, or in your college / university rule book, it says that you are not permitted to carry or use cellphones in class, then the professor had all rights to do what he did.
Personally, if this was the case, and i did get caught, i would think my self lucky i did not get any harsher punishment. You see, in my college, such a rule does exist, and the cellphones of the people caught breaking this rule are confiscated. You are not even allowed to copy the contacts or any other data that you may have on the phone.
On the other hand, if such a rule does not exist, the professor had no right to ask you to leave the class room, unless and until you actions actually disturbed everyone else in class. In such a case, i would have met the professor in his office after class hours, and politely asked him to explain why he did take such a drastic measure.

Gee, all the people in here bitching that you should have turned it off. Maybe you just forgot to.
I don't think he should have asked you to leave. You're paying good money for that class and you don't deserve to miss it just because your phone rang. He's probably a bitter old fool.
If you want to get even, wait for him to do one little thing against school policy...one slight little rule...and then write an anonymous letter to the admin about what he did.
Or....get over it, because when you get into a career life there will be plenty of times either at the office, or anywhere else where you will have to suck it up and there won't be anything you can do about it.
In any case, learn to just let it roll off your back like water off a ducks feathers.

Embarrassing as it is - your professor has every right to ask you to leave if he feels you are disrupting his class in any way. Perhaps you were checking the time and not an incoming call, as I am sure he assumed. If so explain and apologize. If you were indeed checking a call or text - you still need to apologize. You should turn your phone off before class, next time I am sure you will do so.

Why are you glancing at your cell phone in class? Personally I think they're an annoying object that I can almost do without. You shouldn't use a cell phone in class. It should be on vibrate or off completely, and you shouldn't even mess with it until after class. It's just rude. I would have just left and laughed it off with my classmates later...and of course apologized to my professor.

He is in charge of the class so there is not much you can do. If you were warned about it earlier than he was right to do that as it disturbs the lesson. Also you have to make sure you put it on silent or switch it off before going into class. He also has to show the other students what will happen if their phone rings too.

Was it ringing, buzzing, flashing? Was this during a test or exam?
If so - I agree with your instructor. If it was during a test - you should have known better than to check a communication device during the exam. If it was during a lecture, it is a distraction to you, the people around you, and to him (obviously - or he wouldn't have said anything). The instructor's job is to assure that the students get the most out of what they, their parents, or their scholarships are paying for. I've sat through a VERY long jury selection process before. After a break, one of the group did not turn off his cell phone. It rang. The Judge called him out. Asked his name. Then informed the courtroom that he was being fined for disrupting his court. Sounds to me you got off easy.
If you were just looking at the time during a lecture, maybe you need to meet with him and explain that you use for phone to see the time and that your sorry to have disrupted his lecture.

I think he took it as an act of ignorance that you were glancing at your cell. As if you did expect something more important than him trying to teach you something... I mean it's also his time he is investing. Hm - and maybe he was as embarassed - or hurt (?) - because you didn't think his lesson interessting enough to be fully concentrated - as you was when expelled from the class room. Go to him and tell him that you are sorry that you did look at your cell and that you appreciate that he's doing his job and that you understand that he was upset and that you did not mean it (best: bring a bunch of flowers and your apology in front of the class)... Or next time: throw the cell at him

the teacher did what was within his ower, but he may have gone too far in asking you to leave, unless you were using the cell which i believe you indicated in fact you were not,you also didnt mention the class if it was involved human ethics, then the prof might have been using you and the cell to prove a point,,either way you do need to apoligize to the prof and he class for the interuption to him and the class,, and leave the cell off unless you are expecing a call in an emergancy in that case explain to the prof ahead of timeto ill avoid such a case a gain..

If you are in class, you should be respectful of the professor and other students. Turn off your cell phone and put it away. You can check your messages between classes or at a break. If you were checking the time, get a watch (yes, they still make those) instead.
