the time difference regardless of standard or daylight time has always been two (2) hours.....correct?

Nope. It is always 2 hours.

You are correct that the difference is always 2 hours, regardless of the time of year. The only possible exception would be if someone in the Central time zone practiced daylight savings, and someone in the Pacific did not. In that case, there would be a 3 hour difference in the summertime (or, in the reverse case, the difference would be 1 hour).

A long time ago the time zones were not as cut and dry as they are today. Clock time sometimes varied from city to city. This caused a lot of problems with the rail roads. The un-standardized time zones caused a large number of fatal train wrecks due to time conflicts. The railroads were key in implementing the standard time zones. To answer your question, there were probably some towns in these time zones that were 4 hours apart.

for the most part, yes. arizona, i believe, doesn't observe daylight savings time so the difference would not be the same all the time - but the difference is never 4 hours.

it's 2 hour difference if everyone goes for daylight savings. if they don't there are some discrepencies
