In the course of the early modern period, as mainstream alchemy evolved into modern chemistry.
The common perception of alchemists is that they were pseudo-scientists, crackpots and charlatans, who attempted to turn lead into gold, believing that the universe was composed of the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water, and spent most of their time concocting miraculous remedies, poisons, and magic potions.Isaac Newton and Robert Boyle were among tose alchemists..
Alchemy had the following goals: 1. The transmutation of metals into gold and silver, 2. An elixir (creation of a "panacea"), that will prolong life indefinitely, and 3. The transmutation of human life.

Alchemy is the correct answer.

Actually, in modern chemistry the process of turning one element into another is possible. It is a process called transmutation.

However, the energy required to transmute atoms of one element to another element make turning base metals such as lead into gold not cost effective. It cost too much $$ to do, so scientist only transmute elements to study the process and because it can be done. It is alctually done with elements with larger atomic nuimbers.

people have been doing science for thousands of years, but in recent times alchemy is the biggest trend. Sir Issac Newton was a closet alchemist, and used the Greek Myths as a guide to experiments - the names of the Greek Gods were used as meaning elements and compounds, and if combined as described in the stories, they produced described affects. Recent experiments following these principles have shown that the alchemists 'secret' language in the greek tales does follow a pattern.... and that the experiments of Newton are re-producible..
