my daughter hasn't seen her dad in 6 years.. prior to that he had consent orders through the courts giving him only 2 hours every sunday.. he then went to jail and we haven't seen or heard from him since.. legally will the courts allow it and emotionally what effect can it have on her as she accepts she doesn't have one(and isn't really ready for him to come out of know where after so long)

Do you know how long he was supposed to be in jail? Have you tried to contact him there to arrange visitation? Just because he was sent to jail, doesn't mean his rights of visitation expired. On the other hand, he might have had something serious happen there and didn't leave instructions on contacting you as next of kin. He also might not have wanted your kid to know he was in jail and left instructions not to tell you about it. Nevertheless, your kid has a right to know about what happened to the other parent, though you might have to be discrete in how you go about explaining it. Therefore, you should make some kind of effort to find out exactly what has happened. It is better than letting your kid go through the rest of life wondering, hating, etc.

if the court allow it, ask her. it will be very difficult for her, and you need to explain all the circumstances around it. if she's fairly young or immature you could sugarcoat it a bit, but dont too much. she needs to understand why she hasnt seen her father for so long.

do not leave her alone with him for the first few visits, especially if he's committed a violent crime.

does your daughter remember the dad? if she does, it would be good to get some closure.

be ready for her to have some crushed expectations. if she's like most kids, she'll have created an uberdad for herself.

whatever happnes, let her know that you love her.
