A good OB/GYN will not induce merely for convenience or comfort. You could ask them it it is possible and have them see if there are any VALID reasons for doing so. There can be adverse consequences of inducing too soon such as ongoing medical problems for the baby.

For example, some medical research shows that babies born before the 39th week have a statistically significant probability of having jaundice than those born closer to the "normal" 40 weeks. (see source #1)

In addition, other research shows that labor induction leads to a higher instance of additional intervention such as instrumental delivery or C-Section. (see source #2) So if you want to avoid the c-section, research shows that you are better off NOT inducing! I can also relate to this one personally as my wife was induced early (at 38 wks for medical reasons) with our second son. While we had planned on a full term vaginal birth, she ended up having an emergency C-Section and our son was juandiced and had other related medical issues as well. He is doing great now but the medical bills and insurance paperwork have been outrageous compared to our first son.

So what I think you should consider is, even though it CAN be done, is it really worth risking harming the baby for the comfort of being done with the pregnancy or the convenience of having it born while your mother is there? I would hope that your Dr. would talk all of these issues with you and that together you would choose what is best for the baby.

And of course... CONGRATULATIONS on your baby!

First off...no good doctor would do a c/s without a medical indication one was needed.

Second....weights by ultrasound are just a guess and are often wrong by as much as a pound. Do not put any stock in a guess about baby's weight. If you are not diabetic, the odds that your body will grow a baby you can't birth are slim.

Third.....7 lbs 2 oz is NOT a big baby. I weigh less than 100 lbs when not PG and all three of my babies were bigger than that and unmedicated, uncomplicated vaginal births. (7 lbs 13 oz boy & 7 lbs 7 oz girl & 8 lbs girl)

Fourth.....Inducing your labor instead of going into labor on your own is more likely for you to end up with a c/s because your labor may not progress. There is also something called the "cascade of interventions" that basically says once you let them interfere in your labor in anyway, more interventions follow and you become more likely to end up with a c/s. If you don't want a c/s then be patient and trust in your body.

Definitely a doctor can induce you if you request it. You need to have a list of good reasons you want to be induced.
I was induced with both my kids at 37 weeks. My son was 8lbs.6oz. My daughter was 6lbs. 9oz. They are 10 months apart. Wasn't planed.
I live 45 minutes away from the hospital in the mountains and I was scared to death to go into labor at home all alone. My husband was working 12 hour shifts sometimes longer and I never knew when he was going to be home. I was stressing over it. Also another reason was, that I wanted my mother and sister to be in the labor room with me and they need to schedule it with there work to have that day off. I told my doctor all the reasons I wanted to be induced and he scheduled it. I loved being induced. You have everything prepared and your not trying to fill out papers while in pain at the hospital.
I say go for it. Your baby weighs enough to be plenty healthy when born. My daughter like I said was born at 37 weeks and weighed only 6lbs. 9oz. She was a healthy baby girl.
Get induced so your mom will be able to be there. Also, if you have any other children you can tell your doctor you need to provide child care also so it would be easier if you knew when you were going to go into labor.

A doctor may induce labour a 38 weeks, however I would caution you against doing so. Induction before your body is ready can greatly increase your chances of a c-section. Your body and your baby do a "delicate" dance. Inducing your body before it is ready, before the hormones have been released, before your ligaments have loosened and before your cervix is nice and soft can be counter active. Our bodies rarely make babies that are bigger than they can handle. Most often it is babies position that leads to c-section or mom being on her back in labour, going to the hospital too early etc.
Perhaps look at some natural induction techniques such as sex, nipple stimulation, walking, lunges. If your body is ready to have this baby then these things will help. If it doesn't, then like chemical induction it will not work. The problem with the chemical induction is that once you start the process there is no turning back. Be cautious.

first, there's no real way to determine the weight of a fetus, doctors can only guess at what the weight would be. My doc wouldn't even give me an estimate. because he really can't tell. Most doctors won't induce you until you are over due, at 40 wks and won't induce to fit a schedule you and family mmay be on. Talk to your doctor that's all you can do or try to induce labor naturally, Sex, Nipple stimulation or castor oil.

You can talk to your doctor about inducing. He/she may or may not agree with your reasoning, but at least you tried. At 38 weeks the baby should be able to survive outside the womb with little or no problems.

My doctor induced me at 36 weeks and my daughter was 8lbs 14oz.

You can always ask. The worst the doc can say is no and usually it's for teh well being ofyour baby.

Talk to your doctor about it. Many people schedule inductions for a variety of reasons. 38 weeks is full-term but it is up to your doctor to determine if the baby is truly ready.

Doctors don't like to induce if unnecessary. Too many complications and a c-section is most likely the result of inducing. I would wait, you are putting you baby and yourself at risk.
