He was not the only one to do this. Charlize Theron did the same thing after Aeon Flux came out.
I think they are doing becase they would like to support Gay Marriages, but I alos think they just don't want to get married...As lately the hope of gay marriage in the US being completely legal has been dimming.

I think it is his way of never having to marry her. If only 2 states allow it so far think how long it will take for the rest to agree to it.
They will either be very old or both with other partners.
