It depends on how much they want to spend on pre-screening on how much they find out about you. Background checks, IRS documents, etc, all cost money to get copies of. If you're applying at a small firm, like for example I work with a structural engineer, they just want to know that you're not a felon and you appear mostly trustworthy, as we work with some sensitive documents. He doesn't care about where I worked before as I gave him previous employment information during the interview, and was honest. The place I worked before here, I left without notice due to a violent environment. I'm not going to work somewhere that it's acceptable to throw things and throw temper tantrums. The job before that, the company downsized and replaced me with a machine.

they can find out all your personal details including your family details to the website you just opened or the person whoem you just messaged. There is a seperate section in many companies who do a secret enquiry on the details which you disclosed to the company and it gives you a rating whether you are a 'office terrorist', 'spy' or a decent chap who can be promoted!

If you used you social security number, they can find out a lot about you. It's usually best just to be honest up front. Everyone has black marks, I recently hired a guy who had been fired from his last company.

If they have your social security number, they'll know all there is to know about you. Your credit score, whether or not you pay your taxes, your employment history, your criminal back ground, everything.
