My favourite band released a song a couple of years ago with the lyric 'collapsing like the twin towers'. They self-censored and changed it on the radio edit to 'collapsing like dying flowers', which is a much weaker metaphor.

Just wondered if you think the edit was necessary, or if you, personally wouldn't have been bothered. Still can't decide, myself.

Baby Girl 1214 - A link to the whole song, if you're interested. I do think it's a strong song, certainly not a love song.

Thats a tough one. In one way it is a very strong and powerful metaphor, but being such a sensitive subject it would have to be in the right song with right lyrics. Not just some sap saying his heart was collapsing like the twin towers. In that respect they should find something else to use its just not respectfull towards the matter.
So I guess the answer would be yes to using it but it would have to be a really good strong song.

Wouldn't bother me. Hell, what about the 9/11 movies? A line in a song offends people but an entire movie about it doesn't? Where's the basis?

It doesn't bother me personally. But I believe the edit is necessary just because you don't know how people will react to hearing something like that.

If we start getting bothered by lyrics and censoring them then the terrorists have won.

No, that wouldn't bother me. The (self-)censorship bothers me more.
