I think Snape was working as a double agent, and when things came down to the wire in the last book, he didn't have many options (I'm NOT defending him). He could have
1. Not killed Dumbledore, risk being "outed" as a double agent by Malfoy Sr, Malfoy Jr., or one of Voldemort's other cronies
2. Possibly be killed by Dumbledore
3. Possibly be killed by Voldemort, since many of Voldemorts other cohorts were already questioning his loyalty (Snape's)
I think he decided to go to the evil side, but earlier, he had been on the fence. Between Dumbledore's strange affection for him, his hatred for James, and of course for Harry, and his old allegiance to Voldemort, and his need to feel powerful (thus, he became a teacher), and probably he never felt that Voldemort really appreciated his efforts. Snape was an important spy, but Rowling never cast him as being as close to Voldemort as his second-in-command, in fact he goes through other teachers instead of Snape (directly at least, think quirrell)

EVIL!
I know that Dumbledore trusted him, but then Dumbledore has been wrong before. He even admitted it, saying that as he is more intelligent than most, his mistakes tend to be bigger as well. And, I think that putting his trust in Snape may have been his biggest mistake ever. Snape murdered Dumbledore with the Avada Kedavra; it is like Bellatrix Lestrange explained to Harry in Book 5, to make an Unforgivable Curse work, you have to really *mean it*. Harry's righteous anger wasn't enough to make the Cruciatus Curse torture her as it would've if she'd used it on him, but Snape's was successful because he truly hated Dumbledore. He called him a Muggle-loving fool. This is coming from someone who does care about the purity of blood -- he called himself the Half-blood Prince for a reason! He is a known Death Eater, they share that belief. He also took credit for the murder of Emmeline Vance in Book 6, and made an Unforgivable Vow -- more dark art work. He didn't have to, of course. He could've said that speaking of the plan was forbidden by Voldemort and left it at that. He chose to take part.

hmm...!! age-old question, is snape a double agent For dumbledore, or a triple agent For voldemort????
lol....i guess it can go either way. he has something to gain on either side, and that is why his character is the most controversial..... did he kill dumbeledore on dumbeldore's orders? or did he do it in order to help voldemort and malfoy?
i know harry thinks snape is bad, evil, horrible, but it is just as possible that snape is doing what he is supposed to, as well as seeming "bad" in order to trick voldemort. it is a tricky question.. i personally don't really LIKE snape, but what does that have to do w/ which side he's fighting for? i have no idea!! can't wait til book 7. i think snape may be working for the good side, but in a way that makes everyone still hate him. we'll see who's right!
