only if the computer is made out of steak.
then you could press the power button and scream "MEAT IS MURDER!"
only problem is, the computer would probably be delicious.

This question has been covered on star trek with data and a few other computers.... asimov in I Robot ( not the movie ) convered it.
In Terminator, there is a good scenerio.... On the old startrek there was a copule of human/robot engram episodes...Take the motion picture StarTrek, with Veger.
Difficult question.... the computer in # 5 is alive immediately tried to protect itself - wouldn't you?
In lawnmover man the awareness distributed itself across the net, and this method has been used in other movies - you cant turn off every computer on earth...
Since restoring power would re-activate the hardrrives and memory chips, the awareness would return and the awarness would pick up where it left off.... As long as the program and associated memory can be re-assembled, the awareness would whole and complete.... it would probably be more pointed a question to ask if the computer or awareness would FIGHT to keep active, which is the basis for dozens of books and movies...

If computers become self aware we are all in trouble. They will deem us irrational creatures, dangerous and unworthy of life. Further, if computers become self aware I am not sure we could turn them off. Doubt this? Take a look around you and see how many items are computer controlled these day. Then add in the internet, wifi, x-10, and other standards, and realize they could also talk to each other. So I guess my answer would be that they are just as likely to turn us off. As to alive or not, just remember "I think, therefore I am".

How aware is self aware and why would powering a computer off be condsidered death? Power off would be more the equvialant of a black out, once the power was turned back on the self awareness would/should return....
But to agree with another answer, we're a ways off from that yet.

in 20 yrs computers will be 300 trillion times smarter than human beings u will not be able to tell the difference between computer controlled robots and real star dust made human beings there will be military vehicles ie submarines , jets , that will be control by computers these WILL carry nuclear weapons computers ......... whose to say the greatest threat to human beings is not our need to continue , in the sense of evolution are train has stopped this is it , but in the sense of technology and science we are just at the forfront and our need to move forward evolve take the next step . just might be our downfall when the human race creates a highly superior entity or being which eventually must move forward evolve and the next step might just be over us ..

turning it off is temporary, as it can be turned back on again. So it wouldn't be killing it, just disabling it.
