A woman typically ovulates on the 14th day of her cycle, that being 14 days after the day she starts her period.
That being said, if she wants to conceive, she should have sex three days before she ovulates (Days 11, 12 and 13) because Sperm can survive up to three days inside of you and when your egg is released, the little fellas are there to greet it. :)
You will want to keep having sex on the 14th day and then for three days after that just to cover yourself if your egg is a late arrival.
This means a whole week of sex. :) Your husband should enjoy that.
In any case, if you are not wanting to conceive then I would suggest avoiding days 11 - 17 all together.

Most women ovulate about 12-16 days before their period. Sperm can live inside a woman's reproductive tract for up to 5 days given ideal conditions, but the egg has a short life span of only about 24 hours. This means her fertile window likely is somewhere in the area of 11-21 days before her period. She can count backward from when her next period is due to estimate ovulation, but to know for sure she needs to either use an otc ovulation predictor kit or learn how to take her basal body temperature and monitor her fertility signs to determine ovulation.

If your period is regular 14 days prior your period is due, if not it is hard to tell.
