Does anyone know if there has been research on chemical odors released by computers and the safety?

My adult child often has his laptop computer running for hours, recieving emails, doing work, text messaging etc. When I have walked in the computer room where he works, I smell a very strong odor coming from the laptop, which is a plastic or chemical smell. The computer gets hot, but does have a cooling system installed with a high grade fan. I am concerned of the safety of breathing in this chemical smell. I have not been able to find any explanation of what chemicals are released, nor safety reports regarding this concern. Any scientific, actual knowledge is greatly appreciated. Please leave out any ideas or opinions, as we also have many of our own. We are looking for FACTS only. Thanks to all who assist.

It is a big concern that....I sumetimes worry about myself.

Firstly, your computer shouldn't be "burning" tht much (check temperatures; use MotherBoardMonitor software which adds the temperature or ur computer: my temps at norm are 41 CPU and 37 Case degrees). You may need more fans, I have attached an extra fan exhaust OR something has broke.

Also, the materials which are used should be safety checked before being released....a re-call should be considered if the public's health and safety is at compromise. However, "burning" is a different issue.

The plastic is likely to be different in different for each computer - u shd be able to contact the manufaturer for a safety/test report.

If you are still within warranty you should send it back and get it checked.

If you can smell it that strongly, something is getting too hot.

Try blowing out the fans and the heat sink with air. You might need to open the case (or get a pro to do it) and really clean the dust out of it. But, it should not have a strong odor.

Now there is not very much that is all that toxic in a computer. I used to do environmental and safety compliance and for the last 10 years I have been doing network administration. A good safety rule of thumb with chemicals is that if you can smell it, it is not good for you. Like I said, not much there but still....

I would really be more worried about it catching fire. It is not supposed to make any odor, so you want to get whatever is wrong repaired.

You will not be able to smell the odor under normal circumstances. Have the laptop checked by a computer repair guy.

If the laptop is running so hot that you're smelling chemical smells, there is somenting wrong with it! That is NOT a normal condition! Shut it off and have it looked at by a pro.

That's a very interesting question, I also wonder about sitting for hours at desk tops. Sorry I don't have the answer but I will be watching for the responses that you get! Peace!
