I know that not all Americans are good, and I know that not all Muslims are bad, however, why do so many hate us? I understand that we, as Americans, have killed innocents in the past and recent times, but this is part of war and we never, at least to my knowledge, (except in isolated events where those Americans that did commit such acts were punished by our Government.), set out to do so. Terrorists and extremists set out to kill us just because of where we were born. WHY? Really and truly I do not understand. I know a bit about Islam and its teaching as my best friend is Muslim, and he assures me that the Koran teaches peace and does not condone innocent killings. How can people become so confused and full of hate?

I know you will say that I don't live "there" but if I did, I wonder what my thoughts would be. I understand that we have done wrong in the past, but why must humans, all of them, continue to punish each other for their ancestors doings? Will this ever end?

if they hate us, that's one thing, but cowardly acts of terrorism to demonstrate that hate...is another. i have also spoken with muslims...they have all said relatively the same thing: the Quran teaches peace and does not condone innocent killings however, they do not consider the westerners to be innocent and according to them, we all deserve to die. seriously, they said these things in just about one breath, so, ask your friend about that, not what the Quran says.

This is a really good question. I wish I had an answer for it. I don't understand it either. It's really disconcerting the hatred that exists in the world for Americans when we've been trying to help. Of course, atrocities aside (which are few and far between and quite blown out of proportion at times, not always, but sometimes), we are seen as "big brother" and a friend of Israel. The Middle East must have a scapegoat for the ills in their society and they blame the Jews. The Jews have been blamed in the past, as I'm sure you're aware, and they're easy to scapegoat. Only they aren't taking their "oppression" so docily anymore--they have military power and they aren't afraid to use it. After WWII, Palestinian land was given to the Jews to create a homeland, only it wasn't so well-thought-out. The powers that be just assumed everyone would move out of the way and let the Jews have the room. This is such an emotionally charged issue and really destabilized the area that wasn't so stable to begin with. It never has been. You already seem to have one anti-Israel poster here and I don't want to tick anyone off but it's such a time-bomb that anything I say will make someone mad.

Muslims in other countries seem to be swayed easily by media reports and in their mosques that all Americans are evil. While you and I know that's not the truth, most Americans are good-hearted and kind, they only see the bad parts of our society, the parts that they don't agree with or go against their religious teachings. Most of the time we don't agree with the bad stuff either. They don't see the good parts of our society and the good we're doing for the world. They see it as meddling. I see it as the media feeding the Muslims a load of baloney.

Religious tolerance is preached here in America and NOT in other parts of the world in general. It's "normal" to be "against" another group or religious affiliation, even among Muslims. We're not so far removed from this...Christian groups have come a long way in recent years towards religious toleration between themselves (i.e. Catholics vs. Lutherans, etc.). It makes no sense to be so hateful and yet that hate is fed to young Muslims overseas, especially, to continue the aggression. A whole breed of haters have been raised in the past 30 years. They are willing to die for this cause.

Of course, some of the "demonstrations" we see on TV are staged to make people think all Muslims hate all Americans. This can't be true that all of them hate all of us. It's the noisy few who make this world a very scary place.

This seems to be a vey intelligent question. I dont h ow old the questioner , but if you look inbto the history of just United States and compare it with the history of the Muslim world, the word Terorrism or Islamic terrorist never existed in any of the christian or Muslim or jewish books. It all started with the establishment of a brutal and nazi type regime in Israel by the zionist entities and unfortunately the USA supported this regime, thus becoming partner to the brutality of the Israelis, and as a result angering the Muslim world. What we see today, is the anger of the some among the Muslim community, while majority of the Muslim world is peaceful and law abiding contrary to the extreme propaganda by the Isrelies. USA must start understanding the plight of the Palestinians and Muslim world if we want peace in the world.

Well this is just my opinion but first let me tell you who i am and what i do, I'm a United States Army Medic currently deployed to iraq for a second tour, i speak a good bit of arabic and deal with muslims quite a bit. from my view point its got quite a bit to do with this little thing called ethnocentrism. ethnocentrism is an assumption of cultural superiority and an innability to accept another cultures ways. we have all ben guilty of this and theres nothing wrong with that its just part of being in our culture. they harbor animosty towards us because they believe islam is the only way and have little tolerance for other religions, were talking about devout islamic muslims. we eat pork they dont, they don't do drugs or drink and we do, the extremist sees us as an evil entity because in america these things are tolerated, theres a whole lot more things like the way our women act, and i think mostly its got to do with us imposing our selves on other countries, but again i say that were talking about extremists, yes the quran does teach peace but there are verses in there that the extremists use out of context for thier own benefit to justify what they do and to sway others to do thier will.

Not true . Your first sentence ( after the title ) is rather telling . You chose to use "not good" describing Americans -yet chose "not bad" when coincidentally describing the religion of the fanatics who brought terror to our soil 5 years ago today .
SOME people can be confused or full of hate when they believe propaganda , such as you pretend not to display here .I think the "help" you pretend to seek -lies elsewhere ..Just another attempt to mar the memory of the 9/11 victims today . Shame on you .

Is about the fact that the US is the undisputed Military and economic power in the world.

Its like if you have a boss who really uses his power to screw everyone he can just because he can. When he falls from power and comes back down the ladder he will definitely have a severe price to pay. Thus the rest of the world is enjoying watching the the arrogance of the US get its face rubbed in the dirt by a few rag head guerrillas

Before I begin please bear in mind that I have nothing against americans, only their elected govt!

Basically, after 9/11 the world got a good picture of what the states are really doing across the world. After 9/11 the US carpet-bombed most of afghanistan. In this instance it highlights the relevance of what Al Qaeda is trying to achieve. Bin Laden said a year after the US bombed afghanistan that " One year after the Americans killed 280'000 innocent afghans - the world has forgotten it happened, and 2.5 yrs after 9/11 - the world hasn't yet sat down."

This is the best picture of the imbalance in our world - the value of life differs from person to person depending on who they are. That's basically what america is telling the world. I frankly do not place value on 9/11. If Al Qaeda were a country then the US would have invaded it - even though Al Qaeda are trying to free places where the US has invaded. I don't really want to go into it all, but basically, the US walks over the whole world and if it gets hit by someone else then the repercussions are always excessive. I personally have had enough of the US govt and I believe its high-time someone gave them a taste of their own medicine. This comes froma frenchman who grewup in the arabian gulf and is now living in the UK.
