As a little girl, I had a Science project where My Dad made a very intricate maze, (for a mouse). I remember going to the Pet Store and asking where the mice were, and the Person pointed Me to a certain part of the store. I looked into a cage and saw a huge white rat. Puzzled I told My Dad, that isn't going to fit in the maze, He laughed and told Me it was a Rat, not a Mouse. After purchasing the white mouse, We began the process. The mouse was to be put in the entry of the maze for a specified amount of time each day, and I was to document every move that it made. Every wall it touched, every turn it made. This went on for over a week. He wasn't too bright. After the two week period the little pink eyed thing never did find it's way through the maze and to the cheese. I was very surprised. So I don't know about Rats, but Mice aren't too bright.

You know, if a human ate a little bit of the same poison daily, they would grow resistant to that type of poison as well. I have even seen some humans make it through mazes and tread water!
I use to have a rat. I thought he was the coolest little critter, once I got past the unsightly tail. I trained him to come when he was called by name and to steal money from wallets! I trained him to go on a leash and I would give him a bath once a week. Rats, will do anything for food! They will go through mazes and eat poison as long as their is food associated with it. They are very clever and they have had to be. For centuries rats have been public enemy number one and they have had to "overcome" . Rats are clever, because they are survivors! The most intelligent creatures on earth live in the most challenging environments.

The examples you gave are all relative to the circumstances.
If I were placed in a maze - and was hungry - and could smell food, I'd find my way to the food. If I had to go through a maze every time I was hungry, I would learn the path and get better at it each time through. That's what all mammals would do.
If I fell off a boat and the person operating the boat didn't notice - I bet I could tread water several days - to survive. That's what rats demonstrate in that kind of experiment.
It's not a matter of intelligence or being clever. It's the most basic of instincts - to survive.

A couple of extra things just to blow your mind. Rats are now used in Africa to detect landmines. You can see more here; www.herorats.org.
Rats can detect TB in humans and can also differentiate between different human languages.
Rats are truly amazing creatures. Rats aren't necessarily resistant to poison they are just clever. Once they see another rat drop dead from eating poisoned food they know to stay well clear.
Hope this helps.....

Rats are defo the most intelligent animals around. I used to keep them and their not half as bad as people make out. If they werent intelligent, why would they avoid the poison??

we have had pet rats. compared to most other rodents I think they are the most clever. they are easiest to tame. however the females are a bit preferable as the males like to "mark their territory" and that can get a bit old.
how ever our pet rat was able to sit on your shoulder knew when she was to be fed and was quite excellent with many other things we did with her

I own 2 pet rats and they have the worst reputation. They are actually sweet and gentle, many look at them as vermon, but yes, they have overcome a lot and they do deserve some credit!

I used to keep rats, they are very intelligent, have about the intelligence of a 7 year old child!
If you keep them they need 8 hours of stimulation a day if its on its own or it goes insane of bordom.
Their problem solving ability is astounding....RATS RULE!
