Because it was a concept vehicle that got good reviews and it was cheap to make since it is based on the Montana/Venture vans.
Also the spinoff from it have been successful (look at how many Equinox, Rendevous you see out there). And as you say there are alot of them on the streets, a business cares about selling lots of product to make a profit.
For buying it, probably because it was different, relatively cheap, full of features and space and pretty good on gas, without being a (gasp) minivan.
But they ARE the ugliest thing on the road.

Perhaps a bold styling move, but it didn't pan out. As for the functionality, they were hard to beat. Imagine a young couple getting their first vehicle, buying a home, having kids, fixing things up, etc. It is hard to beat the Aztec's functionality - plenty of room to get the kid seats in/out, easy access for Mom & Dad, fold the rear seats down and haul back the loot from Sams Club, and then go to the lumber yard and bring back a dozen sheets of rock, all in the same vehicle. Plus it was all wheel drive.
A bit ugly, maybe (not everyone thinks so), but they did sell pretty well for a while, and now the CUV market is where everyone wants to be. Pontiac was ahead of the curve on that one, maybe a little too much ahead of its time...

Right on! The Aztek is the Whoopie Goldberg of automobiles. It is without a doubt the ugliest thing on 4 wheels.
Every time I see someone driving on, I just chuckle!

Pontiac, like all other car manufacturer thought of coming up with a SUV on a low chasis with lots of space. But they sure did forget to design it nice. I have seen Aztek which has been completly customized with dropped springs, bigger and wider rims and body kit....looks great...It looks almost close to the LAPD SWAT vehicles.

THey were trying to attract the lesbian market away from subaru. I think Rosie was the only taker. The one good thing is you can buy them damn near free. It was definately a swing and a miss!
