The USA does have a dollar coin, but it is seldom seen in circulation. Unlike Canada and the UK, the USA continued to print $1 banknotes, so the coin hasn't caught on.
The current type is gold colored and has a portrait of Sacajawea. It has been struck since 2000.
The Susan B. Anthony type was struck from 1979 to 1981 and in 1999.
The Dwight D. Eisenhower type is much larger and was struck from 1971 to 1978.
The USA also has a 50 cent coin which is almost never seen in circulation.

There are 3 different type of U.S dollar coins. The large silver dollar, the Susan B. Anthony dollar which is about the size of a quarter, and the gold colored Sacajawea dollar with a native American woman on the front.

If you think that's weird we got rid of our 1 dollar bills in Canada many years ago and only have coins. Then a couple of years later they came out with a two dollar coin. We call the dollar coin a Loonie cause it has a loon on it (Jean Chretien) and the two dollar coin is called..............you guessed it..........a TOONIE!!!!!

we have had a couple of one dollar coins, they just have, for whatever reason, not gone over very well. Some people say they are too easy to mix up with quarters, which I can see happening as they are very similar if not the same size.

Shane, if you are in the US, try inserting $5 bills in vending machines. Sometimes they give you change with $1 coins!!
I got about 10 for my friends in South America that way.

The US mint has been making $1 coins long before the bills you are familiar with.

You have never heard of a "silver dollar"?
