When you come home to find your belongings on the lawn and the door locks changed. Seriously though, if you think your marriage is on the outs, the true test is to ask your spouse to go to a marriage counselor with you. If they are willing to, there is hope. If they aren't willing to, they don't care to save the marriage.

i'm an unmarried woman but i'd like to take a second and give my two cents:
i think a marriage = Commitment, Trust, and Love... but using that love to FUEL yourself to continue working on the relationship for the mutual goal of Learning and Growing in the relationship, *together*. (sounds complicated and somewhat hard..but it should be worth it because it is a Marriage--> two people unite as one).
therefore, if you did ALL YOU COULD to communicate, and let that person know that you are in this 100% to work on it, and learn, and grow, and build that trust back, that is the most u can give, right? it is somewhat vulnerable, but a marriage (in my eyes), is something where you are FREE to give and receive love as much as possible, w/o fear of REJECTION. instead of a ball and chain, marriage *should* be where you are free to love and give and dote as much as you want, w/o fear that person will not appreciate it, will not care about u the same way, will not do the same for you.... u married that person w/ the TRUST that they will do right for you and by you!!! that is what it SHOULD be...therefore, if u let ur partner know you are willing and able to give as much as possible, but that u need their appreciation and Acceptance, u are putting your vulnerability on the line because you love that person. if that person is Worth Staying With, She will accept your attempt to change, attempt to do what is right, attempt to make things better, and do HER best to do the same for you. when you two work together as a unit to learn about eachother and do what is right, you will most likely be able to salvage the marriage.
BUT, if one person is giving up, doesn't think the partner is worth it, is lazy, or uncomfortable, or unhappy, or not willing to work anymore because it's just too hard.... pretty much anything Negative.... you have a huge problem, and most likely it's gonna be really hard to fix. both of u have to be Vulnerable, and Appreciate that vulnerability, and not take advantage of it. TRUST that you both are good enough to take care of each other, and Take Care of that vulnerability, so that u can give and receive that love commitment honor, respect, Freely.
i know this may sound lame coming from someone who is not married, but i do have a boyfriend and have been taking a lot of time thinking about relationships, men and women's roles, and marriage... my boyfriend tried to talk about marriage recently and i told him not to bring it up until the 1 year and 1/2 mark (we are currently at 9 months). because we are using this "dating" period to figure out if we will be Good for eachother; we need to find out if we can Trust that we will both do what is Right for each other and the Relationship as a whole. if i don't trust him, or he doesn't trust me, that we can work together well and get thru any problem together, why would i want to marry him??
so... good luck. remember that Love is the basis for a marriage, but it's not just that. for a Good, Healthy, Positive relationship, u gotta be able to use that love to fuel yourself to work Harder, alwasy Improve yourself, Learn about your Partner, and adapt to eachother, give, and forgive, accept, no rejection..... that is a Positive, Healthy relationship, not just staying together cuz u Loved that person in the past. u have to keep working to keep that love Alive.
