They are just the older games that were very big and sold over a million copies.. giving them "Platinum" status

Platinum games are games that have sold very well to the general public. As they become older and newer games come out, these first games get made Platinum and the price is lowered - so basically it's a game that still selling well after been released a while ago.
I guess the name platinum comes from the album terminology, like when they say an album went platinum!

The games that are platinum are the ones which were most popular with all you gamers out there and therefore when a certain amount of games are sold, they get to be put in for platinum.
The normal ones are the games which haven't quite got to the top yet.

Only games that sold loads of copies get to be platinum and they are not allowed to be sold for more than £20.

It's just a new way to market older games. They are cheaper becasue they not the most current.
